Troubleshooting Genie Remote and Universal Remote
In the unlikely event that your Genie remote control stops working, here are some tips that will solve most remote problems.
GUIDED PROCESS
Troubleshoot your remote control with Troubleshoot and resolve
- Visit the Troubleshoot and solve problems tool from a computer, phone or tablet for help.
- Repair volume, channel change, and other remote problems
- The Genie remote control uses light to send the signal to the receiver.
- Lowering the brightness of the TV can solve most signal problems. If something blocks the receiver, this may affect the functionality of the remote control. Even-tempered glass in some entertainment centers can interfere with the signal. We recommend placing the receiver in a free and unobstructed area.
Batteries and receiver input configuration
Can’t you change the channels or adjust the volume with your remote control? The problem may be the batteries or the input configuration of the receiver.
To test the strength of the remote control batteries, press and hold any button on your remote control. If you see:
• A solid green light: the batteries are in good condition.
• A green light that blinks rapidly: the batteries are fine, but they don’t have much life.
• A slow, blinking green light or no light: your remote needs new batteries. To replace them, turn the remote control over, remove the battery cover and insert two AA batteries.
Verify that the remote control is set to control your DIRECTV receiver.
- At the bottom of the remote control, to the right of zero, press and hold the Enter button for three seconds.
- A menu appears to change the input of your TV.
- Select the DIRECTV receiver input. Find the name of the input source for your receiver. For example, HDMI 1: Satellite receiver, can be the name of the input. Try the different inputs to find the one that is set for your TV.
Pairing
Does nothing happen when you press GUIDE? Verify that the remote control is paired with the receiver.
- Point the remote control at your Genie, Genie Mini or Wireless Genie Mini.
- Press and hold MUTE and ENTER at the same time on your remote control.
- The screen shows the IR / RF configuration application. The remote control is synchronized.

Receiver and remote control reset
If the buttons on your remote control, such as Menu, do not work, it could be the receiver. Try restarting the receiver, and if that doesn’t work, restart the remote control.
Reset a receiver
- Locate the reset button. On most DIRECTV receivers, there is a small red button located inside the access card door. With others, the button is on the side of the receiver.
- Press and hold the red button until the receiver restarts.
Note: Can’t locate the red button? Unplug the receiver’s power cord from the power outlet. Wait 15 seconds before plugging it in again.
Reset a remote
If the above tips do not solve the problem, try resetting the remote control.
- Go to the front panel of the receiver.
- Press MENU.
- Scroll down to Settings and help and press SELECT.
- Scroll to Settings and press SELECT.
- Scroll down to Remote Control and press SELECT.
- Reset remote is highlighted. If not, select it. Depending on your configuration, this may be automatic or you may have to enter codes on your remote control. Use the code search tool to find the 5-digit code.
If that doesn’t work, try resetting the remote control to its factory default settings.
- Press and hold MUTE and SELECT together until the light blinks three times.
- Press 9, 8, 1 and SELECT. The remote control flashes four times and should now restart.
